Historical Article "American Singer Standard" By L. Armitage Article from American Canary Magazine, December 1941 Issue Male parent must be a standard Roller male of show stock mated to a female of show stock of the present enlarged model of a Border fancy. By this mating of show birds we expect to breed a bird to represent our model of the A.S., of course this breeding and mating must be with selected stud and an idea of what we demand in the model bird. Song being paramount we have depicted the model as on the lines of the Border but with enlargement of the throat and neck, this new alignment will give different type from all others and in addition provide sufficient room for vocal rendition passing through the throat for vibration and not requiring an enlongated throat which requires more volume by having the inhaled air forced, as it were, through the longer passage. Such forcing of air, only thins out the tone and the produced song can not be sustained because of lack of air within the bird's organs of sound. Our new standard will go into effect in 1943 when all American Singers will be judged only by accepted organization judges. Present stud not conforming with the new 1943 standard can be so altered that by that time their offspring will be in position to enter as A.S. By this dating, present type A.S. are not handicapped for 1941-1942. The size of this model A.S. will be determined through consultation of various club officials meeting at some alter date. however, we have decided that a bird 5 3/4 inches long is quite to the point for show purposes. As we become better organized throughout the country and we get to know better the various breeders, some changes might be made in the model. |
