Northern Ohio American Singer Club CHAPTER 32 |
|
Breeders/Exhibitors/Fanciers of American Singer Canaries As a Christian couple with an "empty nest", Shirley and Marshall were looking for a hobby that wouldn't interfere with their church obligations. For three years, they searched for canaries in their area and in November of 1994, Marshall purchase their first canary as an anniversary present. "Mango" was a red factor male that brightened their grey days with his song. Soon thereafter, Shirley and Marshall attended a bird fair and purchased a past issue of Bird Talk magazine. To their amazement, they saw an American Singer show contact, Marion Chester, in Pennsylvania. He directed them to John Keller in Cleveland, and the rest is history. They purchased their first pair form John, and a second pair from Carol Shepard. They also attended their first shows at Cleveland and Toledo just to see what the shows were all about. Their very first breeding season was an encouraging one, with three males in the same nest. Shirley and Marshall became fascinated with the newly hatched chicks, baby chick chatter, and eventually the maturing male's songs. Shirley says, "The shows were so much fun, with visiting, sharing, raffles, sometimes lunches, AND listening to other exhibitor's and OUR birds on the song trial benches." She adds, "We met friendly people, also. We so much enjoy getting together with them at shows and meetings."
