Northern Ohio American Singer Club CHAPTER 32 |
|
Since Roger was a young boy, he has been very interested in animal life and in particular birds. His parents did not encourage his involvement, and in some cases, tried to discourage it, so he had to wait until post-college years to really pursue it.... and pursue it HE HAS, as he's been the keeper of quite a variety of caged birds over the years. He started out with small pscittacines (hookbills) in 1969, and concentrated on cockatiels for 15 years, long before cockatiels were plentiful and popular as they are today. He then switched gears totally, trying his hand at show dogs, but then had artificial knee replacements and had to find something more passive. Roger remembered how popular canaries had once been in the United States, so he began purchasing common "junk" or mixed breed canaries. He was happy with those until his daughter asked him where she could buy a canary. Having been one of the founding members of his local all-cage bird club, he telephoned the President of the club who referred him to Carol Shepard in Avon Lake. When he visited her home, she brought a few American Singer males into her living room for him to listen to. Roger says, "It only took moments for me to realize, after hearing their superior singing ability, that this was the breed or type I wanted to focus on." He purchased two pairs from Carol's great stock and gave his daughter his "kitchen" canaries! Subsequently, he and Carol became good friends. Roger says he "owes her a lot for mentoring and steering him along through the complexities of trying to produce great singers." From that beginning, Roger has come a long way with canaries. Although his real passion is still American Singers, Roger also raises red factors and Columbus Fancies, and most recently has added recessive whites to his birdroom. Roger loves the comraderie between canary people at the competition shows. Attending six or seven shows, where his canaries compete (in song), is the highlight of his canary year. 2004 and 2005 show results were very encouraging for Roger, as he was ranked by ASC as 4th and 6th in the United States. Being a retired public school educator, Roger devotes a lot of time each day to the careful feeding and cleaning of his canaries. He raises lots of quality babies in the winter season and has good singers and good foundation breeding stock available to those on his waiting list. Roger says, "I am totally dedicated to American Singer canaries and will do most anything to help further interest in these fabulous little songsters." He is located in Vermilion, Ohio, and welcomes folks to his home to see and hear what he has to offer. You may email him at Birdman7938@aol.com He also has a website at www.hilandacrescanaries.com that you will find enjoyable.
